Interpreting Your Degree Audit in Path@Penn

The Degree Audit in Path@Penn accurately shows your progress to degree and includes percentage bars to let you know how far along you are in fulfilling each part of your Arts and Sciences degree.

** It is important to note that the degree audit counts as complete all courses in which you are currently enrolled, including any that have been added as part of Advance Registration. This means that, for example, in late November or December, the degree audit includes both fall courses and any enrolled spring courses, and gives a picture of where you will be in your requirements in May (with the current spring enrollment).

If a block in the degree audit shows as 100% done, that means that it was completed in prior semesters with courses already taken. If any requirement shows as 98% done, that means that it is being completed with courses in which you are currently enrolled.

Every student in the College has a minimum number of total c.u. and a minimum number of Arts & Sciences c.u. required to graduate that are determined by the major concentration once declared in the spring of the sophomore year.  You can see both by clicking the Degree in Bachelor of Arts block in the audit.

    • If you have declared a major, you can see in your degree audit how many total c.u. and how many Arts & Sciences c.u. you have completed and are enrolled in and how many you have left, based on your degree plan. If the audit does not indicate that further c.u. are needed, that means that you will have enough with current enrollment. If there is a green check mark next to that requirement, you have already earned enough credits to complete it.
    • If you have not yet declared a major, you will not see an exact count in the audit, but you will see a message noting that it will calculate once you declare your major.  You can check to see the number of Arts & Sciences c.u. required by major concentration here. You can also use the “Explore Programs” function on the same page of Path@Penn to add a major to the degree audit and see where you would be with that major. Follow the steps in this guide (interactive quick reference guide or accessible PDF) to use “Explore Programs,” or see our Using Explore Programs in Path@Penn video tutorial.

Foundational Approaches can double-count across all degree requirements.

Example of Degree Audit with Foundational requirements being fulfilled from across all degree requirements

Each major has a designated Sector that will be auto-completed upon the declaration of the major. The remaining Sectors must be fulfilled by non-major courses. For more information on fulfilling Sectors, click here.

Example of Degree Audit with a major course fulfilling a Sector requirement

As with the total and Arts & Sciences c.u., if the major or minor block does not indicate that more c.u. are required, that means that you will have completed enough to finish that program with current enrollment.

If you have questions about courses that are (or are not) in the major or minor block, you should speak with your advisor in that department or program.

Courses that do not fulfill any General Education, major, or minor requirement are designated “electives” in the degree audit. Most students will need at least a few electives in order to earn enough credit to graduate. The audit does not show this block with a completion percentage, since there is no preset number of electives that you need. If a course is not used elsewhere in the audit, it will appear here.

You will notice that many of the unfulfilled requirements in these blocks, including all of the General Education requirements, are labelled with a four-letter code called an “attribute.” You can find courses to fulfill that requirement by searching for that attribute:

    • In the panel on the left side of the Path@Penn course search page, scroll to the bottom.
    • Select the “Course Attribute” drop-down menu.
    • Type or paste the attribute in the space provided.
    • Click on the “Search” button.
    • A panel should appear with a list of all courses offered in the relevant term that fulfill that requirement.

*It is important to note that courses fulfilling College General Education requirements will have attributes with titles beginning “College FND” (for Foundational Approaches) or “College-Sector” (for Sectors) and codes beginning “AU**”.
