Travel Grants for Academic Conferences

Travel Grants support College students who wish to present their research at scholarly meetings off campus and may be used to defray the cost of travel and/or conference registration fees to participate in an academic conference.

Grants may be awarded to College students who are presenting a research paper or a poster, mentored by a faculty member, at a scholarly meeting. The fund will provide grants of up to $600. Students may apply for one travel grant per academic year. Graduating seniors are eligible for funding if their research will be presented at an academic conference before they graduate.

IRS Reporting Requirements
For U.S. and resident alien students, all awards/prizes in the amount of $600 or greater must be reported by the University to the IRS on form
1099-MISC. It is the responsibility of all award recipients, regardless of the amount, to report the taxable prize received to the IRS on their personal income tax returns.

For non-resident alien students, the University is required to withhold 30% tax on the full amount of the prize unless the individual is exempt
from taxation under a tax treaty. Contact Corporate Tax, Compliance, and Payroll at doftaxoper@pobox.upenn.edu to determine treaty
eligibility. The prize amount will be reported to the IRS and to the student on form 1042-S.
