Pilot Curriculum Academic Timeline

Things to Keep in Mind Every Semester

  • Meet with your Advisor. Throughout your academic career you must meet with your advisor during advance registration in March and November or you will be placed on registration hold. You should always let your advisor know if you are having any problems that are affecting your academic work.
  • Registration. Check your schedule on Penn InTouch to confirm that you are correctly registered. Make sure that your registered:
    • for the sections that you have been attending,
    • for all parts of any multi-activity courses,
    • for the grade type you desire and you have claimed all departmental permits.
  • Important dates to remember. Consult the academic calendar for add and drop dates. Make an appointment with your academic advisor if you feel that you may need to drop a course or change a grade type.
  • Tutoring. Seek tutoring if you are having trouble.

Incoming Freshmen

APRIL - MAY
  • Come visit Penn! Accepted students are invited to visit the campus during Penn Previews. Map of Penn.
  • The Pilot Curriculum or the Current Curriculum? You will receive a letter in the mail asking you to make a choice between the pilot curriculum and the current curriculum.
JUNE
  • Look for important information in the mail. You will receive your freshman handbook, the name and contact information for your advisor and registration information. (HINT: Read your freshman handbook cover to cover, it contains the answers to almost every question.)
  • Meet your peer advisor. Expect to hear from your peer advisor, an upperclassman at Penn who will help guide you through your freshman year.
  • Housing Information. You will recieve a mailing called "Campus Express" that will tell you how to sign up for housing, linen service, dining service, telephones and more.

Don't forget:

  • A Freshman Seminar. These seminars are given on topics covering all interests and are a great way to try something new.
  • A Writing Course. These courses are offered by departments such as English, folklore, anthropology, history, music, philosophy and art history and are designed to teach you the writing and critical thinking skills necessary for college-level work. This course will fulfill the Pilot Curriculum Writing Requirement.
  • Contact your academic advisor. Come meet your academic advisor on campus or schedule a phone appointment to discuss your plans for your freshman year. Pilot Advisors.
JUNE (LATE)
  • Language Placement Exams. Come to Penn to take your language placement exam for French or Spanish. Contact the Department of Romance Languages at 898-7429.
JULY
AUGUST

 

  • Your fall term schedule will arrive in early August. Your schedule may also be viewed on Penn InTouch. (exact date TBA)
  • Move-In Day. Time to get settled in your new home. New Student Orienation.

Freshman Year
SEPTEMBER
  • Meet with your advisor. You must make an appointment with your advisor during New Student Orientation to begin discuss your course selection, use of your electives, your ideas about a prospective major and your intellectual pursuits in general.
  • Language Placement Exams. Consult your freshman handbook for date, place and time.

Sophomore Year

PILOT CURRICULUM RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet with Your Advisor. You will need to discuss:
  • How you plan to use your electives. You will be required to present a plan for the use of your electives at the end of your sophomore year.
FALL
  • Investigate Major Options. Make yourself completely familiar with the rules and requirements of your prospective major. Check the department web sites for details. Consider doing a double major, an individualized major or a minor.
SPRING
  • You must formally declare your major. You may add a second major or declare your minor later.

  • You must also prepare a written academic plan for the balance of
    your program and discuss it with your advisor.

    NOTE: You will be placed on academic hold; in order for this hold to be
    removed so that you can register, both of the above must be done.

  • Career Services. Open a file with Career Services. They are an excellent resource when you apply for internships, jobs or graduate school.
  • Law School or Med School. Familiarize yourself with requirements or and deadline.

Junior Year

PILOT CURRICULUM RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet with Your Advisor. You will need to discuss:
  • Your finalized plan for use of your electives and your plans for research within your major
  • Your plans for research or independent study within your major.
    Your progress towards fulfilling all of your requirements.

Senior Year

PILOT CURRICULUM RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet with your Advisor. You must meet with your academic and major advisors to insure that you will have completed all of your pilot curriculum requirements and major requirements by the end of the year.
FALL
  • Use Penn InTouch to check your progress toward filling requirements before the end of the fall Add period.
