Course Description:

This interdisciplinary course examines the impact of sex and gender roles on contemporary societies in the US and around the world, using an interdisciplinary approach. Differentiation by sex is the central organizing principle of nearly every human society. How can we understand the relationship between biological sex and socially constructed gender? How do maleness and femaleness affect the balance of power and the distribution of resources? How much has changed since the beginning of the Second Wave women's movement in the 1960s? Have we undergone a "gender revolution?" The course will examine key sites of gender difference and inequality including family life, paid work, violence, body image and sexuality. The course will examine men's roles and women's roles, treating gender as an interactive and dynamic concept. The main focus will be on the US, but the course will also examine gender in an international context and will present topics in social and cultural (as well as in historical and economic) frameworks.
