Pilot Curriculum Writing Requirement

The College at Penn requires you to demonstrate proficiency in writing as part of your liberal arts education, by taking a single writing course, normally during your freshman year. You are asked to choose one of the following options:

  • One Writing Seminar. These courses are designed to teach you the writing and critical thinking skills necessary for college-level work. They emphasize discussion rather than lecture, and multiple drafts and revisions rather than a single version of a paper.
  • English 125, Writing the Essay. This course, which emphasizes the personal essay, is limited to those with excellent writing skills.
  • International Students. If English is not your first language, you may wish to take English 011, Writing for International Students. To satisfy the writing requirement, you will need to take the class twice or follow it with a writing class.

If you have any questions on how to fulfill the writing requirement, please write to pilot@sas.upenn.edu
