McNair Scholars

The goal of the McNair Scholars Program is to bring about greater diversity in higher education by significantly increasing the rates at which high-achieving undergraduates from groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate education apply to, enroll in, and graduate from Ph.D. programs. The underrepresented groups that Penn’s McNair Scholars Program targets include low-income AND first-generation college students, African-Americans, Latinos and Native-Americans. This Federally funded TRIO program pursues its mission by first identifying eligible, academically talented, juniors and seniors, who are then assisted in identifying and taking advantage of graduate school opportunities. The program provides among other services research training and stipends, scholarly experiences, fellowship and internship opportunities, conference travel funds, graduate school information and visits, GRE preparation and fee reductions, and faculty mentoring.
