2002 Dean's Scholars

Each spring, at the Dean's Forum, the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences recognizes nine College students for their outstanding academic achievements. Students are nominated by faculty from among those with a grade point average of 3.7 or higher. For further information about Dean's Scholars, please contact the College Office, 215-898-6341.

Daniel Stahl
(C’03) Economics with a biology minor. He has done independent research on the ability of the yellow starthistle to invade plant communities of varying biodiversity and is assistant director of the soup kitchen at Hillel.

Sanjay Kasturi (C’03) Biological Basis of Behavior and South Asia Regional Studies. Sanjay is a student researcher for the Center for Neuro-degenerative Diseases and the Ralston House. He has contributed to two researchers’ papers which have been in the Journal of NeuroScience and The American Journal of Pathology.

Anita Yu (C’03) Comparative Literature and Theory. Specifically interested in post-colonial literature, Anita is currently writing an honors thesis on J.M. Coetzee, a South African post-colonial novelist.

Afia Ofori-Mensa (C’02) English. Afia came to Penn as a Wharton student and transferred to the College in her freshman year to pursue a degree in English. She is currently writing an honors thesis titled, “Ideals in Black & South Asian America: A Comparative Literary Study.” Outside of class, Afia is greatly involved in the theatre community.

Laura Geller (C’02) Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Program with a history minor. Laura is currently writing an honors thesis for AMES, which represents the culmination of her studies at Penn and in China. Her research currently has the working title, “’Model Plays’—Chinese Drama During the Cultural Revolution.”

Rodrigo Guerra (C’04) Physics and Biochemistry. Rodrigo recently assisted in the preparation of his textbook manuscript, Biological Physics, reviewing the manuscript for coherence and accuracy. He is currently working on a research team looking to develop a densely single stranded DNA (ssDNA) labeled polymer surface.

Vijay Sankaran (C’02) Biochemistry with a chemistry minor. Submatriculed into the MS program in biochemistry and molecular biophysics. Vijay has spent the past three years studying the biochemical basis of decision-making in cells at the School of Medicine. His work has resulted in contributions to publications in journals, including Biochemistry and Molecular Cell.

Jean-Francois Mondon (C’04) Linguistics. Jean-Francois studies ancient Indo-European languages, including Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, and Gothic, to enhance his studies. He spends his spare time reading extensively in history and linguistics and has even started writing some introductory textbooks related to those topics.

Catherine Le Graw (C’02) Economics, dual degree with Wharton. Catherine has worked at the Annenberg Rare Books and Manuscripts Library for the past four years where her main project has been cataloguing a collection of seventeenth and eighteenth century German broadsides. Last year, she completed an honors thesis for economics entitled, “Information Based Market Manipulation.”
