Summer Advising for Incoming Freshmen

Freshmen register for their first semester's courses during the summer before they come to campus. Before they can register, entering freshmen must complete the Advising Questionnaire on the Academic Blog and contact their pre-major advisor to begin a discussion of their plans and goals, and review their preliminary course selections. For students who live close to Penn, a visit with the advisor is best. Students who live farther away may communicate either by phone or by email with their pre-major advisor.

An advisor who is a member of the faculty may not be on campus during the summer. Pre-major advisors will inform their advisees about the best way to reach them during this period. If a pre-major advisor is not available during the summer, the student may call the College Office (215.898.6341) and speak with an assistant dean for advising.

Incoming students will be contacted during the summer by a peer advisor who can assist in contacting their pre-major advisors, answer questions and help freshmen acclimate to the College.

During the summer, students may also want to take part in a live webcast of College faculty and students discussing academic life at Penn. Students can email questions to the panel before or during the webcast and may also view archived webcasts.
