VAN PELT-DIETRICH LIBRARY: GUIDED TOUR
Four identical sessions: 1:30-2:00 pm, 2:00-2:30 pm, 2:30-3:00 pm and 3:00-3:30 pm

The Van Pelt Dietrich Library Center includes several world-class facilities. Highlights include the newly opened Special Collections Center, the Weigle Information Commons (a joint venture with the School of Arts and Sciences and the Office of the Provost) and the Music Library. From ancient manuscripts to modern multimedia, the library contains many treasures.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS CENTER OPEN HOUSE

Join us for a guided tour of the new Special Collections Center and explore rare items from our collections in the Henry Charles Lea Library.

STUDYING LIKE A GENIUS:  1:30 – 2:30 pm
Class of ’78 Pavilion, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center
Capcity: 140 (open to all students and families - registration required)
This interactive workshop will apply Da Vinci’s seven principles to academic reading, studying, and thinking. Presented by the Weingarten Learning Resources Center (VPUL), a Weigle Information Commons Program Partner, this workshop also provides an introduction to resources for learning and academic support at Penn.

GOOGLE PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS 1:30 – 2:30 pm and 3:00-4:00 pm
Meyerson Conference Room, 1st floor, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center
Capacity: 45 (open to all students and families - registration required)
We will provide a guided tour of how power users take full advantage of free tools for improving daily efficiency – such as Google Docs, Google Alerts, Google Scholar and Google Calendar. These tools involve “cloud computing,” where your data is accessible from anywhere via the web. This is not a hands-on workshop but we will answer questions hands-on immediately following each session. No prior experience needed.

STORYCORPS WIC STYLE - FAMILY VIDEO INTERVIEWS 1:30 – 4:30 pm
Weigle Information Commons, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center
Capacity: 30 families (open to all students and families - registration required)
Register for a 15-minute video interview appointment. Talk with your family about important milestones and record video of your conversation on a DVD that you take home with you. Hold on to Family Weekend memories for years to come! Evocative question lists will be provided.

YOU'RE MAJORING IN WHAT?! 1:30 – 2:30 pm

A broad foundation in the arts and sciences prepares students best for the wide-ranging career challenges they'll face after Penn. Come hear successful College alumni discuss the impact of their choice of majors on their diverse career paths. College of Arts and Sciences Academic Advisors and Career Counselors will join in the discussion.

COMMUNICATING WITH CONFIDENCE 2:45 – 3:45 pm

The ability to express oneself clearly and effectively is essential to success in any field and is a hallmark of civic engagement. The College provides CWiC undergraduate advisors who conduct one-on-one coaching sessions with students and facilitate workshops. During this session, advisors will provide a sample of a CWiC workshop. CWiC is a Weigle Information Commons Program Partner. See more about CWiC.

Join us for a showing of student created "mashup" films and a discussion of how video creation is becoming a common assignment medium for many undergraduate courses. We will show clips from winning entries of annual mashup contests from several years.
