New Math Diagnostic Exam |
Many pre-major advisors have requested more guidance in helping incoming students determine if they need to take a math course at Penn and what course is most appropriate. The answer to these questions depends on several factors including the student’s academic interests at Penn; for many students there is no interest or need to take a math course and for others it is a crucial initial building block. Faculty and advisers across the schools have determined that initial placement in the appropriate level of mathematics is essential to student success in science, engineering, economics, business and many other fields (for the majority of students who take math in their first year, the choice is between a course in the first-year calculus sequence [Math 103, Math 104 and Math 114] or Math 170, 180 or 210). In response, the math department is introducing an online diagnostic exam to help incoming freshman choose the math course most suited to the student’s current abilities and academic ambitions. The online diagnostic is to be taken this summer as part of advance registration. (Also see: Starting Math at Penn) Summer 2013 |
Dual Degree with Wharton |
Students who wish to apply for the dual degree program with the Wharton School after their freshman year must finish 4 c.u. each of their first two semesters and must also have credit (or the equivalent) for ECON 001, ECON 002, and MATH 104 by the end of that spring semester. Spring 2013 |
Spanish Language Curriculum |
Students are now able to take either SPAN 202 or SPAN 212. Either course will serve as the pre-requisite for SPAN 219 and SPAN 223 (see below). Students receiving a final grade below A- in SPAN 202 are strongly encouraged to take SPAN 212, but may take SPAN 212 and SPAN 219 or SPAN 223 concurrently. SPAN 223 is a new course that will be offered in the spring as an alternative to SPAN 219. This new course, SPAN 223 ("Perspectives of Spanish and Latin American Literatures") will serve, as does SPAN 219 ("Hispanic Texts and Contexts"), as a gateway course for the major or minor in Spanish and as a prerequisite to upper-level courses and advanced study abroad. Although there is only one section offered in the spring, there will be multiple sections beginning in fall 2013. Fall 2012. |
